Face Fit Testing
Wrongly fitted face masks can be fatal to the user.
A face fit test is a simple test which checks whether a person’s mask fits their face shape and size.
According to guidance from the Health and Safety Executive, tight-fitting respirators (including disposable FFP3 masks and reusable half masks) rely on having a good seal with the wearer’s face in order to be fully effective. A face fit test should be carried out to ensure the respiratory protective equipment (RPE) can protect the wearer. Guidance for COSHH, CLaW and CAW also recommends face fit testing as a method of ensuring an adequate face seal.
When worn correctly RPE should protect the wearer from airborne hazards, including those presented by contagious diseases. Recent research has shown that around 50% of RPE does not offer the wearer an adequate level of protection due to an incorrect fit.
